I can haz new bathroom?

Hubby and I are in the process of working out what we’d like to do with our bathroom. We’ve worked out that it should cost us well under $4,000 for everything – fixtures, fittings, tiles, paint, labour and plumbing/electrical.

Currently, our bathroom… well, sucks:

Bathroom

As you can probably see, there’s not much there. This is the current floorplan:

Yup, just a shower and vanity. Not really that great for a three bedroom house where there’s technically room for a family to live, not just a couple. We obviously have a toilet (that’s out the back, in the laundry) but we would like LOVE one inside, in the actual bathroom.

So, we’re looking at the possibility of knocking out that ridiculous wall in the middle of the room and installing the following layout:

Pretty snazzy, eh? I want everything white or off-white/cream, including tiles, so that it looks as big as possible. That also leaves me the ability to accessorise with colour (and change it up as the mood hits me). Across the bath/shower, I want a simple pane of tempered shower glass, so nothing gets in the way, and I think it’s best with glass as you can see right through it and it keeps your line of vision going right through to the far wall, rather than stopping at, say, a curtain.

We’ll also keep the existing toilet in the laundry because, even I have to admit, it is handy particularly if we’re out in the garden or having a barbeque – it’s easy to duck in, pee, and come back out again without trudging dirt through the house. We will replace that toilet though, with a newer nicer one.

Whadda reckon?!

And now the icing on the cake…

After my Nana passed away on Friday, I didn’t think anything could get much worse.

This afternoon, my dad had a heart attack.

Thankfully, it wasn’t fatal, but he had to go to the local ER, and then to the General Hospital about an hour away. They did an angiogram and then had to put a stent in his heart to stop the clotting. He went off to hospital around 3:30, and we only just got home from the hospital about 40 minutes ago (11:40pm).

He’s doing well, just a bit light-headed and he is on monitors and everything at the Hospital. Otherwise in good spirits – he’s coherent and was joking about with the nurses. He’ll be there for the next few days, meaning he’ll miss my Nana’s funeral tomorrow afternoon.

Let’s hope things don’t happen in threes in this instance.

Decluttering

I need some hints and tips on how to declutter.

I, personally, love to be organised – I’m always organised at work and I try to be at home. However, because we only have a small house and so much stuff, the house always seems cluttered regardless of how much ‘tidying up’ I do. I’m trying to take it one step at a time and declutter one area one day, another the next, etc. but by the time I finish the last area, the first one is a mess again.

Our kitchen, frankly, pisses me off because although we have underbench cupboards and drawers that are full, we still have so much crap on the countertops – like the toaster, chopping boards, the kettle and tea, coffee, etc. I’ve wondered if I should get separate little containers for the pantry and keep all of this stuff in there, but it’s so convenient having it on the counter.

In fact, typing out this blog entry has helped me think of ways to declutter the kitchen- the teas and such that we don’t use regularly can go away, while the coffee and sugar that we used on a daily basis can stay on the counter in square canisters that can be shoved right into the corner. Me thinks I will be buying some containers tomorrow! But what about the toaster? We can’t really shove it away in a cupboard because we use it every day and it would be a hassle to get it out all the time. What about chopping boards? Again, we use them daily, along with the kettle too.

My greatest problem is our bedroom – its small, so only a small amount of furniture will fit in and therefore limits storage space. Also, it’s the last place I am of a day and it’s always at a time where I can’t be fucked with putting stuff away, folding clothes, etc. Just can’t be fucked. So the bedroom floor is consistently a mess. I have tried clearing out huge amounts of clothes (and am currently sitting next to two bags of clothes ready to head to St Vincent de Paul) but there still seems to be too much. I’ve asked Michael to remind me that every time I buy a new item of clothing, I have to throw a piece out (in that sense, I’m replacing clothes rather than adding to my wardrobe). So if I buy a shirt, I have to throw one out. If I buy a pair of jeans, get rid of the old ones (I only really ever wear jeans till they have holes in them anyway).

How do you keep yourself organised?

P.S. – I turned 23 on Monday. How much more responsible and mature does 23 sound compared to 22? Heaps, I reckon.

The first completely finished room

The hallway.

Hallway

Well, I could stop now and say it’s completely finished, but honestly there are a few little touches here and there that need doing. For example, the light shade needs replacing, and more light is needed in general. I will also need to go around the architraves and repaint them, along with ceiling, and there’s a few little patches of yellow that need going over again, but for the time being, it’s done!

Mirror, Mirror on the wall

Check out the mirror! My mum bought this for us when we saw it in this little antiques store. Both mum and I said, “That would look great in our/your hallway” at the same time, so we knew it was meant to be. Only $65 too!
